Six-Team Trade Goes Bust Doggs' Blockbuster Deal Dropped Before Deadline By Harold Berges / Reno Daily Post
LAS VEGAS - Six teams went to bed Tuesday night believing that they were all getting new players for their clubs. By Wednesday afternoon, only four teams would be making roster moves.Las Vegas GM Howe Dogg spent 72 hours perfecting what was arguably the most complex trade in EHCC history. He contacted each team individually, working out everyone's desires and willingness to deal. On Tuesday afternoon, Dogg had his blockbuster trade completed that would have sent twelve players and two draft picks to new homes. A deadline of Wednesday at 4:59PM was set by the Commissioner's office on the deal. Tijuana GM Peter Kantor was sitting in his Interactive Multimedia class at Fitchburg State College on Wednesday morning, located in central Massachusetts, when his cell phone rang. Rakeville GM Jack Reed was calling an emergency meeting at 12:30 and Kantor was required to attend. The meeting also included Weymouth GM Yukon Cornelius, and was about the Doggs' proposed trade. The two parties felt that the deal was too much in Vegas' favor, and it was agreed that Las Vegas and Bizton would be removed from the deal. The new proposed trade was as follows:
In the end, all the teams involved are pleased with the outcome. However, the Las Vegas team was anything but happy. "It wasn't cool that everyone just kinda went behind my back," said Howe Dogg when the trade was announced. "I went through so much to get the other trade done, and then [everyone] just screwed me out of the deal." Vegas plans to still pursue Rockets 2B Rickie Weeks and Red Sox RP Francisco Rodriguez, but for now he is going to sit back and relax for a while. "I'm kinda winded after this whole thing," he finished. Shaddupu arguably had the best end of the trade, upgrading at shortstop and starting pitching, while only losing an outfielder that he had planned to drop before the draft anyway.
The Hispanics, before the deal, had no 1st or 2nd round draft picks. Kantor made it his priority to get at least one pick in all this mess, and he succeeded by getting the 12th overall from Rakeville (who had previously received it it from Las Vegas). "You always are upset when you lose a franchise player such as Jim [Thome]," said Kantor at a press conference this evening. "We did what we had to, and the organization wishes him all the best." The original deal by Vegas had intended to send 3B Aaron Boone from Bizton to Tijuana, but after much debate with ownership, they decided against it because according to Kantor he is a "little bitch."Canada can also rejoice, for they are not losing Cuban defect Jose Contreras. The original deal had Contreras heading to Bizton, but instead will remain in Quebec City. The Piglets chose to go younger in this deal, trading Nomar Garciaparra for Bobby Crosby. Meanwhile, Thome will be a great offensive weapon in a lineup that was top 5 in the league in all five batting categories. And what of the Rockets? Rakeville is overjoyed at the acquisition of Garciaparra. "This is great," said GM Jack Reed. "I now have the second best shortstop out there, in my brain." I mean, because he is such an excellent writer. |
